GSA Morgan Dollars

Millions of silver dollars, Morgan and Peace type, languished in the US Treasury vaults during the 20th century. Except in the west, primarily at casinos, the use of $1 coins fell from favor. The Federal government decided it had to dispose of the coins and called on the General Services Administration (GSA) to conduct sales/auctions to sell off the excess coins. Sales were conducted in 1973-1974 and again in 1979-1980. Chaotic at best, the sale and release of these coins gives us the opportunity to own a unique piece of history. Many of the coins have been removed from their original GSA designed holders and some have been certified by one of the 3rd party grading companies. But it is still possible to find Morgan silver dollars in the original GSA package and those are now bringing a higher premium.
