Over the years many different ways of collecting Morgan Silver Dollars have been devised. The most popular over the last several decades has been to collect by data and mintmark. In the early days, however, the only coins popular with coin collectors were proof coins. Another popular way at the beginning of the 20th century was to simply collect the coins by year where a single specimen of each year was collected. Since the great 1964 Mint release many collectors collect by VAMs, variations of die errors, cracks, clashes and other marks specific to a particular mint. Many Morgan dollar collectors only look for proof like or deep mirror proof like Morgans. Over the years my own method has been to collect by year, mintmark and VAMs that I found interesting.
